just opened a lvl 1 map and relised i had no clue how to plot a course but i did find out you have to have a normal pickax.

Yes in-order to open a treasure map you must need a normal pick axe and the treasure map. then you must get a sextant to guide you to the treasure. You must do this all in a timely manner or the treasure will be lost.
